Prior to and during extremely hot weather, treat your lawn to deep infrequent irrigations. If you treat your lawn to deep irrigations once a week during hot weather, it will be more effective than short daily applications of water. The best time to water is in the early morning. Since clay absorbs so slowly here in northern California, adjust your sprinkler heads for slow absorption. Since sandy soil absorbs water more quickly, plan to water more frequently. Aerate your lawn to improve the movement of water and nutrients into the soil. Aeration also decreases run-off and helps the grass to grow longer roots and become more drought resistant.
